The Center is the only licensed agency in New Jersey that provides
housing and treatment for both adolescents and adult women ages 14-40
who are pregnant, homeless, abused, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and
want to carry their babies to term. The Center is their safe place and
source of hope. Each resident is educated in life skills, such as
managing a budget, pursuing career opportunities, and running a
household. The Center also offers prenatal care, life skills
development, substance abuse treatment, intensive case management,
counseling (individual, group, and family), and discharge planning.
The Center for Great Expectations has designed a semester-long
internship to provide an enthusiastic and “self-starting” student with
a well-rounded experience that introduces him/her to all facets of a
comprehensive non-profit organization. Students will earn hands-on
experience that mirrors what professionals at the Center do on the job
and assist in the enhancement of the Center’s many programs and
benefits for the women and children housed there.
This is an unpaid, semester-long internship with the goal of achieving
credit via the education institution the Intern attends. The student
and the Center enter into a mutual relationship where the student is
provided with the experience necessary to fulfill the internship
standards of their College/University, and the Center is provided with
the knowledge, talents, and skills of the student for the betterment
of their programs, events, and institution as a whole.
An Intern’s schedule is made on his/her own volition, but must be
presented to the Supervisor (to be determined at the onset of the
internship) in advance. The Center acknowledges that days and hours
depend on the class schedule of the Intern, and therefore require a
weekly/monthly schedule to be submitted before the commencement of the
internship. Only the Intern is responsible for reaching the set number
of hours required by his/her College/University.
Additional minimal requirements include possessing a valid driver’s
license and having access to his/her own transportation and filling
out and returning all necessary paperwork to the Supervisor before the
commencement of the internship. This includes, but is not limited to,
a physical, letter of recommendation, Child Abuse Record Information
consent form, a declaration of confidentiality, and fingerprinting.
The Intern is responsible for completing any and all forms prior to
his/her first day at the Center. All paperwork can be completed during
the student’s winter or summer break (depending on the semester of
their internship).
Some responsibilities include:
Assisting with the detailed aspects of non-profit administration and
operations, special events programming and coordination, and providing
support for the President, Vice President, and program leaders as
needed
Assisting in running programs and special events when needed
Continuing to develop and run the Center’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
The Center has provided the Intern with several books to assist in the
development and maintenance of the social media platforms Facebook and
Twitter. These readings are not mandatory, but are strongly encouraged
as each book is applicable to the responsibility of the Intern to
maintain the Facebook and Twitter pages for the Center.
