WILL alumnae Kelsey Martin, class of 2012, is receiving recognition for her girl’s empowerment program, “Rise Like a Girl”. Kelsey works with 8-10 year old girls at the elementary school where she teaches in Houston, Texas to help them start to develop a ‘toolbox’ of empowerment strategies to equip themselves for obstacles they will face in the future. Kelsey’s goal is to “encourage girls to rise above societal limitations and live the life they’ve always imagined… to strive for transformation, where girls turn doubt into affirmation and weakness into power.” Kelsey credits the Women’s and Gender Studies courses she took at TCNJ during her time as a WILL student for opening her feminist conscience and inspiring her to start “Rise Like a Girl”.
