The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Internship

The National MS Society is working toward a world free of MS. People affected by MS can live their best lives as we stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever

Headquartered in Center City Philadelphia, the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter was established in 1954 and is one of the largest of the Society’s chapters.  Our Philadelphia office is located at 30 South 17th Street, Suite 800, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

Intern Application Process

Internships are typically 3-4 months (or one semester) long. These positions are unpaid but may earn college credit.


 

Community Engagement Intern (Spring & Summer)

The Community Engagement Intern will work closely with staff and other interns to build awareness and engage the community in supporting the chapter through participation and volunteerism in our programs, events and services.  This role will provide opportunities to use and develop skills around relationship building, partnership cultivation, marketing and public relations including newsletters and social media, human resources and training and event planning.  This position is an unpaid internship but may earn college credit.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Have obtained at least Sophomore status in a Bachelor degree program; OR be enrolled in Graduate degree program
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and proactively follow up
  • Excellent organizational skills with careful attention to detail
  • Sensitivity to and a positive attitude toward people with disabilities

Data Analysis Intern (Spring & Summer)

The Data Analysis Intern will work closely with the Development Department and Volunteer Manager to ensure the proper coordination and analysis of event volunteer data.  This role requires an intermediate level of comfort and skill with Microsoft Excel including pivot tables and vlookup.  This role will provide opportunities to use data and data tools to ensure that all events and programs have adequate and appropriate volunteer coverage by sorting and organizing volunteer registration responses, creating regular volunteer statistics prior to events and being responsible for post-event data analysis to inform future event decisions.  This student will also have the opportunity to evaluate our existing data coordination systems, provide input and suggestions for improvement.  This internship is best suited for a student who can commit to a full academic year.  This position is an unpaid internship but may earn college credit.

Event Planning Intern (Spring )

The Event Planning Intern is an integral part of the successful execution of the chapter’s major fundraising campaigns that support our mission to move toward a world free of MS including Walk MS, Bike MS, Zumbathon and MuckFest.  This role will provide opportunities to develop and utilize skills in the area of event logistics, donor cultivation, communications and correspondence, customer service and marketing as well as overall event evaluation and reporting.  This position is an unpaid internship but may earn college credit.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Have obtained at least Sophomore status in a Bachelor degree program; OR be enrolled in Graduate degree program
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (preferably 2010)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Social Services Intern (Spring)

The Social Services Intern will work closely with Services Department staff including MS Navigators to respond quickly and effectively to MS client needs.  The intern will communicate regularly with MS clients, healthcare service providers and others to support a comprehensive approach to the diverse challenges of living with MS.  The intern will also experience and assist with the necessary administrative duties necessary to document and manage client case loads and program management including survey and program evaluation, data entry and statistical and narrative reporting.  This position is an unpaid internship but may earn college credit.

Special Events Intern (Spring)

The Special Events Planning Intern will work closely on the planning and implementation of the chapter’s special fundraising event Preakness at the Piazza.  This role will provide opportunities to use and develop skills in the area of event logistics, vendor and donor cultivation, communications and correspondence, customer service and marketing as well as overall event evaluation and reporting.  This internship is only available during the spring semester.  This position is an unpaid internship but may earn college credit.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Have obtained at least Sophomore status in a Bachelor degree program; OR be enrolled in Graduate degree program

Individual Giving Intern (Spring)

The Individual Giving Intern will work closely with our Donor Relations Manager to build relationships with constituents and drive revenue growth. Projects for this role will include prospect identification and research, donor data management, giving trend analysis, and the coordination of at least one major appeal or engagement mailing. This internship is intended for someone considering a career in fundraising, and will provide opportunities to learn about individual giving practices and strategies. Intermediate skill with Excel preferred. This position is an unpaid internship but may earn college credit.
